Also in 1983, the successor to Toyota Corona, Camry, made its debut in the United States.

The compact 4-door front wheel drive 83 Toyota Camry offered a 2liter 4 cylinder 92 horsepower engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. The MSRP was around $8000.00. That first year 50,000 were sold in the U. S.

In 1992 the third generation Camry grew from compact to mid size. A larger V6 3 liter 185 horsepower was also available. The 5 speed manual transmission was standard with an optional 4 speed automatic transmission.

The 1998 Camry was equipped with an engine immobilizer to help deter auto theft. More than 400,000 Camrys left Toyota showrooms that year.

Although there has been a decline in sales in recent years, more than 12 million Camrys have been sold in the U S as of 2018. The best year for Camry sales was 2007; almost ½ a million units found their way onto American roadways that year.

This step must be completed in 15 seconds. Step 4. Press and release the brake six times and take out the key. This step must be completed in 20 seconds. Step 5. In 10 seconds or less put the key you are programming into the ignition. Step 6. Press and release the gas once. This step must be completed in 10 seconds.  Step 7. The security light will go out after blinking 80 times. This indicates the new key is now programmed. Step 8. To exit programming mode, remove the key and press and release the brake once.
