Alicia slammed into Galveston and Houston in 1983 with wind gusts of over 120 mph; the category 3 hurricane reaped 21 souls and left billions of dollars in destruction. Nintendo’s Mario Bros. made its first appearance. President Reagan ordered the invasion or Grenada. Astronauts were successfully catapulted into earth orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger.  Thirty thee months later, Challenger exploded a little over a minute after launch. All crewmembers were lost. The Dustin Lee Huffman’s comedy Tootsie was in the theaters. The final episode of the successful television series MASH aired. Also in 1983, the successor to Toyota Corona, Camry, made its debut in the United States.

The compact 4-door front wheel drive 83 Toyota Camry offered a 2liter 4 cylinder 92 horsepower engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. The MSRP was around $8000.00. That first year 50,000 were sold in the U. S.

In 1992 the third generation Camry grew from compact to mid size. A larger V6 3 liter 185 horsepower was also available. The 5 speed manual transmission was standard with an optional 4 speed automatic transmission.  

The 1998 Camry was equipped with an engine immobilizer to help deter auto theft. More than 400,000 Camrys left Toyota showrooms that year.

Although there has been a decline in sales in recent years, more than 12 million Camrys have been sold in the U S as of 2018. The best year for Camry sales was 2007; almost ½ a million units found their way onto American roadways that year.

(1983-1991) Camry has a non-transponder keyed ignition (Ilco part number: TR37); the key code series are F5951-F9710.

(1992-1997) Camry has a non-transponder keyed ignition (Ilco part number X217/TR47), (the substitute is Ilco part number X225/B80). The key code series is 10001-15000.

(1998-2001) Is equipped with a transponder-keyed ignition (Ilco part number TOY43AT4, 4C Chip), (Ilco service key part number is X217/TR47). Additional transponder keys can be programmed using the Silca RW4 Plus cloning system or on board programming. A working master key is needed for both procedures. The on board programming procedure is as follows: Step 1. Press and release the gas and brake once. Step 2. Put a working master key into the ignition. Step 3. Press and release the gas five times. This step must be completed in 15 seconds. Step 4. Press and release the brake six times and take out the key. This step must be completed in 20 seconds. Step 5. In 10 seconds or less put the key you are programming into the ignition. Step 6. Press and release the gas once. This step must be completed in 10 seconds.  Step 7. The security light will go out after blinking 80 times. This indicates the new key is now programmed. Step 8. To exit programming mode, remove the key and press and release the brake once.

Keys cannot be programmed for 1998-2001 Camry with a diagnostic. If a working master key is not available the Electronic Control Module has to be replaced. The key code series is 10001-15000.

(2002-2006) With Toyota (Type 1 or Type 2) keyed ignition system. The non-high security transponder key used is (Ilco part number TOY43-AT4, TOY44D-PT, 4D Chip. The service key is (Ilco X217/TR47). The engine immobilizer is optional. The key code series is 50000-69999. A diagnostic tool, cloning, or on board programming can be used to program additional keys. If all keys are lost the immobilizer must be reset.

(2007-2011) With Toyota (Type 4) keyed ignition system. The non-high security transponder key used is (Ilco part number TOY44D-PT, 4D Chip). The service key is (Ilco X217/TR47). The key code series is 10001-15000. A diagnostic tool, cloning, or on board programming can be used to program additional keys. 2010 was split year. Some 2010 Camrys use Type 4 D chip. The rest use Type 5 G chip. If all keys are lost the immobilizer must be reset.

(2007-2011) With Toyota (PROX 1) Push to Start ignition system. FCC ID: HYQ14AAB is used.

(2010-2014) With Toyota (Type 5) keyed ignition system. The non-high security transponder key used is (Ilco part number TOY44G-PT, TI 80 bit encrypted system). The service key is (Ilco X217/TR47). The key code series is 10001-15000. A diagnostic tool, cloning, or on board programming can be used to program additional keys. 2010 was a split year. Some 2010 Camrys use Type 4 D chip. The rest  use Type 5 G chip. If all keys are lost the immobilizer must be reset.

(2015-2017) With Toyota (Type 6) keyed ignition system. The non-high security transponder key used is (Ilco part number TOY44H-PT, Texas Instruments 4D74 128 bit system). The service key is (Ilco X217/TR47). The key code series is 50000-69999. A diagnostic tool and cloning can be used to program additional keys. 2014 was a split year. Some 2014 Camrys use Type 4 G chip. The rest use Type 5 H chip. If all keys are lost the immobilizer must be reset.
